What is it?
We love this photo. It sums up what we do. Here we’re working with a young man to work out his budget. He’s just got his own place and isn’t sure where is money is going. By being creative, patient and building a relationship, we’ve got to the bottom of his spending and he now understands better where it’s all going. This means he can budget better, keep on top of his bills and keep his home!
What do we do?
We provide a short number of practical 1-2-1 sessions to help with the initial phase of getting a home sorted. Young people can often be impatient to make their home lovely, but lack some of the resources, skills and knowledge about how to achieve this. We don’t have a magic wand, but can help the tenancy get onto a surer footing in the first few weeks. We can help with setting up any new benefits claim, sourcing furniture, finding grants to support with costs, help with painting and small practical tasks as well as help them get to know their neighbourhood.
Does it work?
Research tells us that many new tenants don’t feel emotionally invested in their home because it doesn’t feel like a home. An absence of furniture and white goods can quickly result in an abandonment and future homelessness. We want to prevent this awful situation happening to the young person as well as save the public purse and create sustainable communities.
